Award Winning Books
For 2020, each month we will read the winner of a different teen book award. At book club, we will discuss the book and the award and do an activity related to the book. All are welcome, even if you haven’t finished or even started the book!
For July the book award is the Morris Award and the winning book we will be reading is Darius the Great is Not Okay by Adib Khorram. For our activity we will make one of Darius’ favorite treats – rosewater ice cream.
The William C. Morris YA Debut Award, first given in 2009, honors a book published by a first-time author writing for teens and celebrating impressive new voices in young adult literature. The award’s namesake is William C. Morris, an influential innovator in the publishing world and an advocate for marketing books for children and young adults. Bill Morris left an impressive mark on the field of children’s and young adult literature. He was beloved in the publishing field and the library profession for his generosity and marvelous enthusiasm for promoting literature for children and teens.
Darius the Great is Not Okay
Darius the Great is Not Okay was a 2019 winner of the Morris Award.
Marked by depression and high-school unpleasantness, Darius’ lackluster existence takes an unexpected turn when he travels to Iran to meet his grandparents for the first time. There, a meaningful friendship opens up new possibilities to Darius, whose sensitive soul-searching will resonate with many teens.
